A Condition Of Confusion

Posted on 12 May 202512 May 2025by Richard G Crockett

I want to explore this subject more, but here, now, I want to quickly jot down a memory impression before it vanishes from looking at it too much. There was a moment on the trail in which I felt myself fainting, veered off to the left, spun down on my seat to a rock of … Continue reading “A Condition Of Confusion”

Freedom

Posted on 1 May 2025by Richard G Crockett

Is not always what it may seem to be. If you have more freedom, you also face more challenges. We might think that an incarcerated being has many more barriers, but look at the size of the rooms and buildings in which they remain. Now, look at the size of your own freedom to travel. … Continue reading “Freedom”

Safe Now, Not Home

Posted on 4 April 2025by Richard G Crockett

Fresno is not my home any more. I maintain an address here. It is where I have family. I have stuff stored there with an office and a mat for my visits. But wow. It was sketchy getting here. I was in more danger in LA than anywhere out in the wild. Out of money … Continue reading “Safe Now, Not Home”

Stories In The Stones

Posted on 31 March 202531 March 2025by Richard G Crockett

I am still in Campo. The bus does not come until Monday. I spent two nights outlaw camping here. In fact, as I write this,, I am outside under an oak in the dripping wet pre-dawn edge of light by a creek on the very slab of granite you see in the photo. A century … Continue reading “Stories In The Stones”

Safe In Camp

Posted on 28 March 202528 March 2025by Richard G Crockett

Camp Lockett in Campo, California is where I am spending the night. It is an old ranch that hosts PCT hikers. They have experienced people who give talks and a pancake breakfast. Also, bathrooms and a charging station. Camp Lockett is now a non profit event place. And they still do horses. I will talk … Continue reading “Safe In Camp”

Fainting Up The Mountain

Posted on 24 March 2025by Richard G Crockett

Three days to go seven miles. Wow. Water becomes a serious problem when you run out yet are too exhausted to make it to the next source. Five times I walked a one mile stretch of hot desert trail, up and down. This because first my advance was sent back to get water, and then … Continue reading “Fainting Up The Mountain”

Pacific Crest Trail: Go!

Posted on 23 March 2025by Richard G Crockett

I made it to the Southern Terminus. Missed the Greyhound to San Diego; no refunds, no applying towards a new ticket. Lost money! Went to the Amtrak station next door. Cheaper and nicer anyway. But the train from Fresno goes to Bakersfield first and then you have to take a bus to LA. There, you … Continue reading “Pacific Crest Trail: Go!”

The Oracle

Posted on 17 August 202411 August 2024by Richard G Crockett
A bundle of drying yarrow stalks.

It was while camping at this knoll of rest and recuperation that I gathered sixty-five yarrow stalks. This was of course not in Yosemite National Park! It is flagrantly illegal to cut and gather vegetation in any National Park! I would never do that! No. Certainly not! Instead, I teleported to another place when I … Continue reading “The Oracle”

The Yosemite Falls Trail

Posted on 13 August 202411 August 2024by Richard G Crockett
On the Yosemite Falls Trail, this is the first lookout. It is about one fourth the way up. It feels like half.

For fit people, two hours is a fast ascent of the official distance of 3.4 miles. It is a mile — without exaggeration — of climbing in that 3.4 miles though. The trail is just about eighty-five percent up! Much of the trail is made of granite steps placed by the Conservation Corps in the … Continue reading “The Yosemite Falls Trail”

Off To Tuolumne

Posted on 2 August 2024by Richard G Crockett

It took less time to live the story than it is taking to write about it! But I’m off to Tuolumne Meadows tomorrow. I have a series of posts that will auto-publish, but at this writing, I have no moderator to approve new people’s comments. I might be out a while! A couple weeks! I … Continue reading “Off To Tuolumne”
