Simple Tools

I believe in simple tools.

If you cannot accomplish the task with simple tools, you do not rate complex tools.

A hand-held power plane is difficult to use. It is difficult to use for those who are adept at hand planes. One slightest error, and a vast swath of wood has been removed. hand planes are also difficult to use! One must build up the very muscles required to wield them consistently. One could, conceivably, learn with a power planer, but that would actually be a more difficult path. I would be interested in inspecting the work of one who made such a claim.

Right now, with my music, I have one small amp with two jacks — an instrument and a microphone. I have my best mic in the mic jack, and my cheap podcast amp in the other socket. With these, positioned ever so subtly and the amp’s set up ever so clean, I get a pretty good sound with combined vocals and baritone ukulele or tenor guitar playing.

Simple tools.

Next: One take recordings. No punching in and out with overdubs, no mixing multiple takes.
